Bimodal Bilingual Education · ASL & English

Learning, the way Deaf brains process.

At Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, every student learns in a fully accessible, language-rich environment grounded in American Sign Language and English. Our academic approach is built — from the floor up — on the science of how Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children learn best.

Our Educational Philosophy

The Bimodal Bilingual Approach

"Bimodal bilingual" means our students learn in two modes — visual (American Sign Language) and written/print (English). It's not one language replacing the other. It's two complete, equal languages working together to give every student full access to learning.

Every Mill Neck teacher is bimodal bilingual — fluent in both ASL and English. This 100% bilingual teacher rate means students never have to wait for an interpreter, never miss a side comment, never lose the rich incidental learning that happens between formal lessons. The classroom is theirs, fully.

Research consistently shows that Deaf children with full early access to a complete sign language develop stronger literacy in English, stronger academic outcomes, and stronger identity formation. Our model reflects decades of this research — and seventy-five years of practical wisdom.

Architecture for Learning

DeafSpace Design.

Mill Neck classrooms and common spaces follow DeafSpace Design principles — an architectural framework developed at Gallaudet University that shapes the built environment for how Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people actually use space.

That means careful attention to sight lines (so signers can see each other), lighting (to avoid shadow on hands and faces), color and contrast (to keep visual focus on people, not patterns), acoustics (for students with residual hearing or hearing technology), and circulation (so movement doesn't disrupt visual conversation).

The result: spaces that feel right. Spaces where students don't have to compensate for an environment built for hearing users.
