Empowering the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community since 1947.

For more than 75 years, Mill Neck Center for the Deaf has been a place of education, opportunity, and unwavering faith โ€” anchored in the historic Mill Neck Manor on Long Island's Gold Coast.

"Creating a world for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals where they are included, empowered, celebrated, and embraced as equals."
Our Mission
The Mill Neck Center for the Deaf

One mission. One family. Four organizations.

Mill Neck Center for the Deaf is the operating name of Lutheran Friends of the Deaf, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1947. We are the governing organization that brings together three subsidiary entities โ€” each serving the Deaf community through a distinct mission, all united by faith, community, and over seven decades of unwavering commitment.

A Vision Born in Faith

From a Gold Coast estate to a beacon for the Deaf community.

In 1949, a group of Lutheran pastors pooled their own personal finances to purchase the 86-acre Sefton-Dodge Estate โ€” a Tudor Revival mansion built in 1923 for Lillian Sefton Dodge, the highest-paid female executive in the United States in the 1930s.

They paid just $216,000 for the property โ€” and on September 26, 1951, the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf opened its doors to 19 Deaf children. From that mustard-seed beginning grew everything we are today.
